Paddling Blackwater Lake with the Cypress Trees January 27, 2015

As we meandered up Blackwater Creek this morning the Pileated Woodpecker's call echoed across the Swamp and a Red-shouldered Hawk flew from his perch as we paddled by. There are dozens of ancient Giant Cypress stumps still standing as they have for the last 100 years with Maple Trees and Cabbage Palms growing from their hollowed out bodies. It's Spring out here according to the Red Maples and Elms, they are full of new leaves. Out on Lake Norris the old Cypress are still asleep, gray and weathered full of Air Plants both Bartrams and Quill Leaf. We got to see an Opsrey and a young Bald Eagle but their nests are abundant. While the blizzard is brewing up North we're paddling in the Florida sunshine!
